The mandarin comes from the tropical areas of Asia. It is believed that its name comes from the color of the costumes worn by the Mandarins, rulers of ancient China. Its cultivation was introduced in Europe in the 19th century. In the communityValenciana produces 90% of the mandarin in Spain.

It belongs to the Rutaceae family, with characteristics similar to the orange tree, although smaller and more delicate. The bark is smooth and shiny, the color variesfrom yellow to red-orange and the pulp is juicy and sweet. It is divided into 10-12 segments, with seeds or not inside depending on the variety in question. It is one of the most popular fruits in the world for its ease with which it peels,its size and aromatic flavor. Clementine, Tangor, Satsuma, and Owari are some of the most common mandarins available.

Nutritional properties of mandarins

This orange fruit contains little amount of sugars and its main component is water. Its amount of fiber is appreciable and its consumption is indicated to promote intestinal transit. Of its vitamin content, the C stands out folic acid and provitamin A. It is one of the fruits with more carotenoids that together with vitamin C provide the food with important antioxidant properties. Antioxidants comthey fight the harmful action of free radicals, substances responsible for the development of cardiovascular and degenerative diseases and cancer. Tangerine is also ideal for athletes due to its potassium content and other nnutrients, constituting a good alternative to replace minerals and fluid lost after physical activity, minimizing the risk of injury.

When going to the market, choose those with the skin well adhered to the inner segments, without wrinkles, spots or blackheads. The more they weigh, the better, since they will be much juicier and will last longer.in optimal conditions. The smell is also a good indication; it will be sweeter or more intense the more ripe the fruit is.

Store the mandarins in a ventilated place and at room temperature. Always in a fruit bowl andavoiding contact with other fruits. After a week they should be kept in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. There they can hold between 10-15 days perfectly.
